A now long dead Italian writer Cesare Pavese writes, “Life is pain.” This is not a new statement. Many Christians believe this statement because of Jesus’ crucifixion, and priests and pastors often say that our world is filled with sin and sinners. But is it true that life is pain?
When we are born we cause our mothers much pain, and in some cases continue to cause pain until our deaths. Our bodies cause us pain, from disease or injury. Love causes pain when it ends in divorce or death. When our dreams are crushed in a “sea of troubles,” we are in pain. The pain of aging, silence and solitude also cause us pain. Lastly, our deaths cause us pain, both in our minds and in the hearts of loved ones.
Counter this argument with the moments of happiness, fleeting as these often are, and of no pain. In such moments, which are numerous, and if we are not overly ambitious, life is blissful. More can be said in favor of this premise. But what seems more certain is that life is both pain and bliss.
I guess that leaves you with the question; is it worth it?
